Hosting at ksan.app
A short map of where to put a web page, where to buy a domain, and how to point the domain at the page.
Places to host a web page
- Netlify — good for static sites and simple forms, with a git push to deploy.
- Vercel — good for Next.js and other frontend apps, with preview links on every change.
- Cloudflare Pages — good for static sites that should sit next to Cloudflare DNS and a global cache.
- GitHub Pages — good for a free page that lives in a GitHub repo, including project docs.
- Fly.io — good for a small app in a container, close to users in a chosen region.
- Railway — good for an app plus a database, deployed from git without running your own server.
- Coolify — good for self-hosting on your own VPS, with Docker apps behind your existing proxy.
Places to buy a domain
- Namecheap — straightforward checkout and a clear DNS panel, fine for a first domain.
- Cloudflare Registrar — at-cost pricing, and DNS is already where many sites are managed.
- Google Domains — no longer sold by Google; existing names moved to Squarespace Domains.
- Squarespace Domains — the current home of former Google Domains, fine if you already use Squarespace.
- Porkbun — low prices, free WHOIS privacy, and a simple DNS editor.
- GoDaddy — very widely used, but watch renewal prices and add-on upsells.
- Hover — a quieter registrar, handy if you want domains without a busy marketplace.
- Dynadot — low-cost names and bulk tools if you manage more than one domain.
Point a domain or subdomain at the page
Buy the name at a registrar, then edit DNS where the domain is managed (often Cloudflare). Give DNS a few minutes. HTTPS usually appears once the host sees the name.
- GitHub Pages — put a file named
CNAME in the repo root with the full hostname (for example hosting.ksan.app). In DNS, add a CNAME for that host pointing at youruser.github.io. For an apex domain, use the A records GitHub lists instead of a CNAME.
- Netlify, Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, Fly.io, Railway — add the hostname in that host’s dashboard, then create the DNS record they show, usually a
CNAME to their target for a subdomain, or A / ALIAS records for the apex.
- Coolify on your own server — add an
A record for the subdomain to the server’s IP, and a reverse-proxy site block (Caddy here) to the app’s local port. Do not let a second proxy take ports 80 and 443.
